Wood Board Decks as a Substrate for Steep Slope Roofing

April 2023

The wood materials constituting a roof deck and their condition at the time of application is critical to the installation of roofing materials, their appearance afterward, and the longevity of the system. This is especially true of older homes with aging wood board decking and varying gaps between them. Wood board decks are an acceptable substrate under Malarkey shingles, but failure to correct deficit conditions (gaps ¼” and greater, warped, split, cracked, deteriorated, or rotted boards) can result in damage to the roof covering and may void your warranty should a claim be filed.

Installation of Malarkey Roofing Products Shingles Over Unvented Roof Assemblies

February 2022

Malarkey Roofing Products installation guidelines state:
“To prevent harmful condensation or heat buildup, air must circulate freely under the roof deck. Install roof vents at ridges and eaves. Building codes require one square foot of free ventilation to each 150 ft2 (1 m2/150 m2) of attic area or one square foot/ 300 ft2 (1 m2/300 m2) if 50% ventilation is provided near the ridge. All roof structures must have thorough ventilation to prevent entrapment of moisture-laden air behind roof sheathing. Ventilation provisions must meet or exceed current FHA or HUD requirements and adopted building codes.”

Storage and Handling of Asphalt Shingles

October 2020

The storage and handling of asphalt shingles prior to installation may affect ease of application and long-term shingle performance. Double-stacking pallets can indent, deform, or stain the shingles over time, particularly in warm weather or when shingles are exposed to direct sunlight. All inventory should be systematically rotated so older material stored the longest will be the first moved out (first in, first out, or simply, FIFO).

Asphalt Shingles and Granule Sloughing

September 2020

During the manufacturing process, roofing granules are embedded with pressure into the heated asphalt surface of shingles. To ensure complete and thorough coverage, more granules than necessary are used, with the goal to adequately cover the asphalt on the roofing sheet. The excess granules are referred to as “hitchhikers” in the industry, and most are reclaimed in a later stage of the process. Despite the effort to remove hitchhikers, some granules remain on shingles as they’re packaged into bundles.

Code-Compliant Starter Shingles

May 2020

International Building Code and International Residential Code state shingles must comply with ASTM D3462, so how wide do starter shingles need to be to comply? The simple answer is 2″ (51 mm) wider than the exposed portion of the shingle.

Tejas Iniciales Conforme a Códigos (Español)

The Use of Malarkey Dura-Seal 3-Tab Shingles for Starter and Hip & Ridge Shingles

April 2020

Malarkey’s standard shingle installation instructions mention the option to use trimmed, self-sealing 3-tab shingles (and only 3-tab shingles) for starter shingles and with restrictions, hip & ridge shingles. Adhering to these conditions still qualify your roof for coverage under Malarkey’s Limited Lifetime Shingle & Accessory Warranty, but similarly modified laminate shingles are not allowed and will void the warranty.

Shingle Racking Installation

November 2019

Malarkey shingle installation instructions in our Specifications Manual state: “Straight up application of shingles, or racking, is not recommended.” Racking is an installation method roofers use to apply shingles in a straight up, vertical fashion rather than using the diagonal or stairstep approach described in Malarkey instructions.

Instalación Vertical de Tejas (Español)

Noviembre 2019

Malarkey's Sustainability Practices Support Applicants to a Washington State Community Development Program

September 2019

The Evergreen Sustainable Development Standard (ESDS) is a program created by the State of Washington to set building performance standards for affordable housing projects or programs seeking funds from the state’s Housing Trust Fund. Malarkey’s sustainability practices can support program applicants best in Section 6 of the ESDS.

Installation of Self-Adhering Membranes in Hot Weather

July 2019

Elevated temperatures can affect the ability to remove the protective release film from a self-adhering (SA) membrane’s underside adhesive. The higher the radiant temperature of the roll, the more aggressive the adhesive becomes, and this can make the release film more difficult to remove. Recognizing this and taking precautions, SA’s can be installed despite the conditions.

Draining of One Roof Onto Another

June 2019

How effectively a steep slope, asphalt shingle roof sheds rainwater is primarily a matter of roof slope and effective use of flashing, including downspouts and gutters. As part of this system, Malarkey recommends against the drainage of one roof directly onto another, especially because the lower roof often has less slope than the upper.

Installation of All Asphalt Shingles in Hot Weather

June 2019

Asphalt roofing shingles are used in a wide range of temperatures with great success. Asphalt’s behavior changes with temperature and exposure to radiant energy from the sun. In hot weather, shingles become more pliable, but with a few tips, can be easily installed despite the conditions.

Why Do Malarkey Products Include a Warning Relative to California Proposition 65?

October 2017

In 1986, California voters adopted a measure called the “Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act,” […requiring] warnings so people could choose to avoid areas or consumer products with chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive harm. All Malarkey products come with a “Safety Data Sheet” that lists the hazardous chemicals that comprise them, and warnings are included where necessary even though they may exist in extremely small amounts. Potential hazards associated with these chemicals are rare because of the physical nature and “hardened state” of the roofing products in normal use.

Roof Assemblies Utilizing Radiant Barriers

August 2017

There are various kinds of radiant barriers, usually sheets of aluminum foil or thin sheets of material with foil laminated to it. Their purpose in a roofing system is to reflect radiant solar energy penetrating the roof and redirect it back out before it can raise temperatures within the house. Installed correctly, radiant barriers’ intent is to keep attics cooler in hot weather.

Use of Roof Water Runoff

April 2017

Homeowners may want to use their roof water runoff for various domestic or household purposes. Asphalt shingles, including those containing algae-resistant copper granules, may be considered safe in terms of groundwater and leachate contamination (State of Washington Research Study – Roofing Materials Assessment).

Fastening Shingles Over Open Overhangs

August 2016

Roof overhangs at the eave and rake edges of a house provide shade and help keep rain-water off the siding, windows, and doors. When these overhangs are open (without soffits), exposing the underside of the roof deck, the following is our recommendation for fastening shingles so nail ends will not protrude through the decking and be visually displeasing.
