Our Smooth Grade Underlayment

Secure Start® SG (smooth grade) is a lightweight, synthetic underlayment providing a layer of moisture protection over the entire roof, and suitable for use with asphalt shingles, roof tile, and metal.

Its smooth surfaces, top and bottom, lessen shingle drag and increase installation speed.

Underlayment for Shingle Roofs

A new roof requires more than just shingles. It’s a cohesive, coordinated system of 5 parts: 1) ice & water barrier, 2) underlayment, 3) starter shingles, 4) field (roofing) shingles, and 5) hip & ridge shingles.

As the name implies, underlayment sits under the shingle and provides a vapor barrier covering the entire roof.

Three Underlayment Options for Shingles.

Moisture Barrier

Made from recyclable polymerized polyolefin, in four unique layers, Secure Start® SG is a synthetic, water resistant membrane applied to the wood decking of the entire roof as an extra layer of water penetration protection and backup to your shingles.

Smooth for Speed

The SG in Secure Start® SG stands for Smooth Grade, aptly named because the surface of this underlayment is smooth, so shingles easily glide across the top, aiding installation speed.

Installed Second

When installing a complete 5-component system for your new roof, underlayment is installed second, after the ice & water barrier, and prior to the starter shingles.

Mechanically Fastened

Sheets are applied with 1″ diameter plastic or metal cap fasteners.

Strong & Durable

4 plies, with a synthetic polyolefin reinforcement layer, provides greater tear strength than conventional felt paper underlayment for exceptional durability.

Water Resistant

Non-porous monolithic layer of polypropylene helps resist water penetration.

High tear strength and embossed surface design help prevent accidents by providing an anti-skid surface for workers, and keeps roofing materials from sliding.

Sustainable

Made from recyclable polypropylene that be re-used for new product production at the end of its lifecycle.

Wrinkle Resistant

Lays down flat and does not wrinkle when moist or wet.

Enhanced Warranty

Enhanced warranties are available when product is used in a complete roofing system of Malarkey shingles and accessories, and installed by a Malarkey Certified Contractor.

Warranty

1030 Secure Start® SG is eligible for expanded warranty coverages relative to its use as a single roofing accessory or in combination with others in a complete Malarkey roofing system. Installed separately, it carries a 10-year product warranty against manufacturing defects. Contact Malarkey’s Technical Services Department for details.
