A Historic Transformation in North Carolina

Skyland Roofing Overcomes Seven Layers with Malarkey Vista® AR

Project Details at a Glance:

Summary: Skyland Roofing recently took on a 24-square residential roofing project in Canton, North Carolina. What began as a standard replacement quickly revealed a massive challenge. They began by removing seven layers of old roofing material, including original wood shakes dating back to 1910. Then they replaced the entire roof deck. This was followed by the removal of two chimneys. Finally, the team installed Malarkey’s Vista AR architectural shingles in Brilliant Black. By introducing Malarkey’s rubberized NEX® Polymer Modified Asphalt to the Western North Carolina market, Skyland Roofing LLC delivered the ultimate in quality and long-term protection for this historic home.

When updating a centenary home, roofing contractors must be prepared for almost anything hiding beneath the surface. Homeowners seeking to preserve their historic properties while upgrading to modern, high-performance weather defense require a contracting team with expertise and a commitment to quality. Recently, Josh Rector and the team at Skyland Roofing LLC completed a project in Canton, North Carolina, that tested their skills and showcased the strengths of a complete Malarkey roof system.

A Century of Roofing Layers

Every roof replacement involves a tear-off of the existing roof, but the Skyland Roofing crew uncovered something exceptional: seven layers of roofing material. Hidden at the very bottom was the home’s original wood shake roof from 1910.

Stripping away over a century of old materials was a monumental task. Once the roof was reduced to bare bones, the crew found spaced slat board decking. This discovery required complete re-decking of the entire roof to meet modern building codes. If that wasn’t enough, the project scope also included removal of two old chimneys. Despite these immense structural challenges, the Skyland Roofing team met the challenge and set the stage for a premium roofing upgrade.

It's very rare to see SBS Modified shingles in the Western North Carolina market, and for it to be the first Malarkey installed it was quite a unique and exciting experience! We are big fans of the product! —Josh Rector, Skyland Roofing

Why Malarkey? Quality and Long-Term Protection

With the structural challenges resolved, the homeowner needed a roofing system that guaranteed uncompromising quality and long-term protection. Skyland Roofing recommended Malarkey’s Vista AR architectural shingles in the striking Brilliant Black color blend.

For Josh Rector and his team, this project was a milestone. It was their first time installing Malarkey products, and they were thrilled to introduce our shingles to Western North Carolina. “The installation went incredibly smoothly,” said Rector.

For extra defense against the elements, Skyland Roofing installed a comprehensive Malarkey Secure Choice™ roofing system including: Arctic Seal® ice and water barrier, Secure Start® Lite synthetic underlayment, Smart Start® starter shingles, EZ Ridge™ hip & ridge shingles, plus a ridge vent.

High-Performance Protection and Sustainability

By choosing Vista AR architectural shingles, Skyland Roofing provided this historic Canton home with a roof engineered for the future. The new roof has the following features and more:

  • NEX® Polymer Modified Asphalt: Malarkey’s proprietary rubberized asphalt core blends high-grade asphalt with upcycled polymers and synthetic rubber, creating a highly flexible, durable shingle that resists cracking and brittleness better than traditional oxidized asphalt shingles.
  • Class 4 Impact Rating: Vista AR shingles boast a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, providing the highest level of defense against hail and severe weather.
  • Algae Resistance (AR): Specially formulated granules help prevent the dark, unsightly streaks caused by blue-green algae growth, keeping the Brilliant Black roof looking pristine.
  • Superior Wind Uplift Protection: Malarkey architectural shingles feature The Zone®—a wider, patented nailing area—these shingles ensure accurate fastener placement, dramatically improving leak prevention and wind resistance.
  • Sustainable Engineering: Every Malarkey roof shingle incorporates upcycled materials, such as reclaimed rubber tires and plastic bags, to help reduce landfill waste. 3M™ Smog-Reducing Granules, included in each shingle, use sunlight to clean the air of emission pollutants.
