How The Zone® Nailing Area Works

Malarkey's Patented Solution for Superior Roof Performance

Summary: Roof integrity depends on precise nail placement, yet standard shingles often have narrow nailing lines, leading to failure due to missed targets. Malarkey’s patented The Zone® is an oversized nailing area, up to twice as large. This wider nail zone helps ensure nails hit the common bond nailing zone, securing shingle layers together and bonding shingles to the roof. The result is superior wind resistance, effective leak prevention, and faster, correct installation, making your home investment more secure.

Precision is vital when protecting your home. Often, the difference between a durable roof and a failing one is just an inch. Specifically, it comes down to the placement of a single nail. At Malarkey Roofing Products®, we believe homeowners deserve certainty. Consequently, we engineered The Zone®. This patented, oversized nailing area redefines roofing performance.

The Problem with Small Targets

Most standard shingles use very narrow “nailing lines,” and unfortunately, this thin strip is the only safe spot for a nail. A contractor must hit this mark to properly secure both layers of a laminate shingle to the roof deck.

However, real-world roofing is fast-paced. Installers often work on steep slopes in intense heat. Therefore, hitting a tiny half-inch target thousands of times is difficult. If a nail is too high, it misses the under-layer shim. As a result, the shingle may blow off prematurely. Conversely, if it is too low, the nail head is exposed to the elements and labeled a “shiner.” This eventually leads to leaks.

What is The Zone?

The Zone is our direct solution to this challenge. We expanded the critical nailing area significantly. In fact, it is up to two times larger than a typical shingle. Instead of tiny, narrow lines, installers now have a wide nailing zone.

For the homeowner, this means a higher standard for success. Your roof is built with a better margin for error. When nails land in The Zone, they hit the common bond nailing zone. This overlap creates a monolithic barrier against the elements.

Why It Matters for Your Home

  1. Superior Wind Resistance: A shingle is only as strong as its attachment. The Zone helps ensure every nail hits the strongest area. Consequently, this prevents blow-offs during high winds. This is why Malarkey shingles are trusted in harsh climates.
  2. Leak Prevention: Poorly placed nails often cause leaks. However, The Zone makes accurate placement much easier. Thus, the risk of exposed “shiner” nails is virtually eliminated. This keeps your attic dry and your insulation safe.
  3. Faster, Correct Installation: A larger target means a smoother process. Moreover, you gain peace of mind. Your contractor can work efficiently without being hindered by impractical standards.

The Malarkey Standard

At Malarkey, we engineer complete systems. For instance, The Zone works with our proprietary shingle formula, NEX® SBS Rubberized Polymer Modified Asphalt. Together, they provide a flexible and durable roof.

Your home is a major investment. By choosing The Zone, you choose a product built for reality. In summary, it is more than a nailing area. It is the foundation of a secure home.
