HER Roofing Earns ARMA Gold Award with Malarkey Legacy® Shingles
Roof restoration on the historic Settlemier House attracts national attentionA healthy amount of respect is required by the contractor repairing a building on the National Registry of Historic Places. Not only must the contractor respect the work and craft of the original builders, but they must also acknowledge the structure’s historic value, regardless of its eccentricities in the modern era. So when the 1892 Settlemier House near Portland, Oregon, needed a local roofing contractor for roof restoration work, they knew exactly who to call: HER Roofing.

I told the owner that he needed to go with Malarkey because it's polymer-modified—Jana Zavala, Owner/Founder HER Roofing
The Contractor
HER stands for Honesty, Equality, and Respect – all core values of owner and founder, Jana Zavala. In the roofing industry for over 22 years, she previously worked for Malarkey as a national training manager before starting her own contracting company in Oregon. HER Roofing has installed Malarkey roofing products for seven years.
“I told the owner that he needed to go with Malarkey because it’s polymer-modified and will install better around the cone,” said Zavala, citing the roof’s unique challenge. “I also told him that using Legacy® shingles with Scotchgard™ would potentially reduce the maintenance costs associated with algae growth,” she added.
The Project
The project included a full shake tear-off, re-roof, and restoration of wooden gutters. In total, the team installed 44 squares of Malarkey Legacy® Shingles with Scotchgard™ in Black Oak from materials distributor Dealers Supply in Portland, Oregon. These shingles were selected for fire resistance and historically appropriate appearance. Additionally, HER Roofing installed vertical plywood, custom-fabricated curved wooden gutters, and returned the original copper spire to the top.
The Legacy® Scotchgard™ is Malarkey’s highest performing roofing shingle. Designed in the popular architectural style and made with Malarkey’s industry-leading NEX® SBS Rubberized Asphalt, Legacy® Scotchgard™ shingles deliver superior all-weather resilience, a Class 4 hail impact rating, and include granules that help reduce algae streaks and clean the air of emission pollutants.
Other Malarkey products used on the roof included:
- Secure Start® Plus is a lightweight, synthetic underlayment designed with anti-skid technology.
- Smart Start® starter shingles, which provide increased wind protection at the eaves and rakes of the roof.
- RidgeFlex® hip & ridge shingles for extra impact protection at the more vulnerable high points of the roof and subtle, enhanced curb appeal.
- Arctic Seal® ice & water barrier is made for areas of the roof most susceptible to leaks.
The Award
Annually, the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) announces the winners of the 2026 Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards at the International Roofing Expo (January 2026 in Las Vegas, NV). The awards recognize outstanding low- and steep-slope asphalt roofing projects across North America, judged in four key categories: Why Asphalt, Project Challenges, Distinction, and Beauty.
Top-scoring projects are awarded Gold, Silver, or Bronze medals, with additional honors available in Best-in-Class categories, such as In the Neighborhood, Commercial/Mixed Use, Craftsmanship, and Technical Difficulty. This year’s winning projects demonstrated the beauty, affordability, and reliability of asphalt roofing nationwide
“We received an impressive range of submissions, with each winner showcasing creativity, precision, and technical skill,” stated Reed Hitchcock, ARMA Executive Vice President. “These projects reflect the innovation and craftsmanship that define the asphalt roofing industry.”
Past Malarkey Winners
Previously, Malarkey Roofing Products® has earned notable recognition in the ARMA contest. In the 2024 Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards, roofing contractor Forest Dennis and his team earned a gold in the mountains outside Bozeman, Montana, where their 110 squares of Malarkey’s Legacy® shingles earned the top distinction. In 2022, Legacy® shingles also received a Bronze award as part of a renovation project at the Island House Hotel in Mackinac Island, Michigan.
Industry Acclaim
A founding member of the National Women in Roofing organization, Jana Zavala has made improving the American roofing industry her life’s work. It is no coincidence that Zavala’s contracting company, HER – Honesty, Equality, Respect – Roofing, has earned national recognition and respect for her crew’s high-quality work. And while the work of equality – in roofing and society – is never finished, celebrating the success of a ‘100% women-owned’ roofing contractor is a triumphant milestone along the path.
