Malarkey Highlander® AR Shingles: Back in Brilliant Black

The team chose Highlander® AR shingles for this large project. As an industry leader, Highlander AR uses Malarkey’s NEX rubberized (polymer-modified) asphalt technology. This process adds upcycled polymers from rubber and plastic to refine the asphalt. The result is:

• Superior impact resistance: Highlander shingles are UL 2218 Class 3 rated for impact resistance (the second-highest rating possible).
• Wind resistance: Asphalt flexibility helps shingles withstand high winds.

For a 103-square roof, resistance to impact and tearing is essential. Highlander AR delivers that strength and weather resilience through better flexibility and strong granule retention, especially when compared to traditional oxidized shingles.

Wider Nailing Area

Additionally, Malarkey shingles feature a wider nailing area called The Zone®. Wider nailing lines on the top of the shingle create a bigger target that’s easier to hit to improve installation speed and accuracy. The nailing area helps ensure every nail hits and penetrates both laminate shingle layers (where the two shingle layers overlap), in order to properly secure the shingle to the roof and protect against shingle uplift and blow-off.

Algae Resistance

Highlander AR shingles also feature built-in algae resistance (AR). In regions with high humidity, dark streaks from blue-green algae can form and appear to age a roof visually. Specialized copper granules prevent algae growth to keep the roof looking good. Paired with the Brilliant Black shade, the roof adds a modern look to the estate.
